The power of storytelling

The power of storytelling by Ozgur Dogan

I want to talk about this pen in my hand. This is not an ordinary pen. I lost my father in 2012. He died of a heart attack while solving crossword. He had this pan in his hand. I found this pen on the table when I want to tidy his house after burying him. It was just about the crossword of a daily newspaper. He couldn’t finish the cross front. I sat at his desk and even put on his slippers and took his pen in my hand and tried to complete the crossword from where it left off. I tried to find the last place he left of in crossword. Then I found it. He tried to fill in the place where it says “not imprisoned in the planet”. He could just write “my son” on the paper. At that moment I couldn’t hold back my tears. The answer had to be “free” and my name means “free” in Turkish. This pen is a simple one dollar pen. It was a plastic pen for you until you heard my story, the meaning and the value of the pen to you change after hearing the story. So what happened? In the meantime, I told your story and got you emotional invested in up an emotional investment. More emotionally invested that you are in anything in your life, the less critical and less objective the observant you become. A simple plastic pen start to mean something to you in just one minute… that’s the Power of Storytelling…
